John Long Forensics

Calling all parent volunteers!

JLMS Forensics 2013 is in need of your help! We need Forensics volunteers, coaches and judges for the 2013 Forensic season.

Coaching: We are in search of volunteers to be coaches to our talented Forensics students.Volunteers can choose to coach their child or group of children if their child is involved in Forensics, and can also chose to help coach other Forensics students and/or groups.

Judging: We are also looking for volunteers to be trained to be judges at forensics meets through out the season.  We are required to bring one judge for every five entries to every meet. Judges are required to attend one Middle Level Forensic Association (MLFA) sponsored training. There will also be future trainings, dates still TBD.

There are three training workshop dates scheduled in which individuals will be trained in Forensics judging.  The dates of these meeting are as follows;

December 13, 2012, 6-8pm at Whitefish Bay Middle School (Ms. Brauer and Ms. Schalk will beat this training),

January 9, 2013, 6-8pm at Cudahy Middle School, and
January 10, 2013, 6-8pm at Whitefish Bay Middle School

General Volunteers:  We also are looking for parents to help supervise students at our meets. We may have to serve as judges at some meets,so we will need help overseeing students.

We are hoping to attend four Forensics meets as a team this season, starting in February 2013 and ending in March 2013.  A tentative schedule with specific dates will be available in January when official registration begins.

If you have any questions or are interested in being a Forensics coach or training to be a judge, please contact Ms. Brauer at (262) 373-5856 or Ms. Schalk at (262)376-5836 by December 13. We will host a parent information meeting the following Thursday, December 20. We will be looking forward to it!

Thank you in advance for your interest and help!  Hope to see you at Forensics practice and meets soon!

Sincerely,

Ms. Brauer;Head Forensics Coach

Three Part Lecture Series on Supporting Your Children in Challenging Times

You are invited to Part II of a three part series presented by Dr. Mazius and the North Shore Center.  The series is focused on supporting children in challenging times.   Part II - Setting the Stage for Autonomy and Success: How Parents Can Use Technology to Foster Independence at School will be held in the JLMS Library at 7:00pm, Thursday, December 6.

During Part I, Dr. Mazius shared strategies to help parents balance the natural desire to protect children and the students need for independence.   Parents learned that a rewards and punishment system only works to change a child’s behavior in the short term.  Dr. Mazius educated parents on how to build a child’s intrinsic motivation in order to impact long-term success.

Building Intrinsic Motivation

  1. Provide children time to do things forthemselves.
  2. Listen to your child (give them a voice).
  3. Let children fail in order to learn how to succeed (provide scaffolds for success and let children try on their own).
  4. Pay attention to the degree we control children.
