7th Grade World Issues Fair, January 17th

Dear Parents/Guardians

Greetings!

The 7th grade is hosting a World Issues Fair to celebrate the work our English classes have been doing for the last month or so. 7th graders have been studying a world issue or problem (such as education for girls in Vietnam, the conflict in Syria, lack of water in Africa, etc.) and have created a policy brief about that issue. They will be presenting this information to the JLMS community (and parents) to bring awareness to the problem and let people know how they can help.

When: Thursday, January 17 during 9th hour, 2:30-3:16 pm.

Where: Multi-purpose room

Our7th graders have been working extremely hard on this project and are excited for this chance to share their projects. The purpose of our unit was not simply to learn about a problem or an issue, but to teach others about that problem. Therefore, we would love to see as many faculty, parents, staff and other students present as possible.

Each visitor to the fair will be given a ticket that represents ‘money’ that can be donated to one group’s issue. The 7thgrade is raising funds right now, and ultimately, a donation will be made on behalf of the 7th grade at JLMS to somebody’s world issue!

Ifyou have any questions or concerns, please email Mrs. Pabst or Ms. Brauer!

Thankyou so much! We hope to see you on January 17th!

Best,

Ms. Brauer, Mrs. Pabst, Mr. Pabst, Mrs.Loeffler, Mrs. Grossman

Three Part Lecture Series on Supporting Your Children in Challenging Times

You are invited to Part II of a three part series presented by Dr. Mazius and the North Shore Center.  The series is focused on supporting children in challenging times.   Part II - Setting the Stage for Autonomy and Success: How Parents Can Use Technology to Foster Independence at School will be held in the JLMS Library at 7:00pm, Thursday, December 6.

During Part I, Dr. Mazius shared strategies to help parents balance the natural desire to protect children and the students need for independence.   Parents learned that a rewards and punishment system only works to change a child’s behavior in the short term.  Dr. Mazius educated parents on how to build a child’s intrinsic motivation in order to impact long-term success.

Building Intrinsic Motivation

  1. Provide children time to do things forthemselves.
  2. Listen to your child (give them a voice).
  3. Let children fail in order to learn how to succeed (provide scaffolds for success and let children try on their own).
  4. Pay attention to the degree we control children.
